Getting Started

New players usually do best with simple, controllable discs instead of jumping straight to high-speed drivers.

I’m new to disc golf. What discs should I start with?

Most beginners should start with three discs: a comfortable putter, a straight midrange, and an easy-to-throw fairway driver. This gives you enough variety without making disc selection overwhelming.

Start with our Best Disc Golf Discs for Beginners guide, or browse our beginner-friendly discs.

Should I buy a starter set or choose discs individually?

A starter set can be a simple and budget-friendly way to cover the basic shots. Choosing discs individually gives you more control over the exact putter, midrange, driver, plastic, and weight you want.

If you are not sure what to choose, read our How to Choose Disc Golf Discs guide.

What disc should a beginner throw first?

A straight midrange is often the best first throwing disc for a beginner. It is easier to control than a driver and gives clear feedback as you learn your release angle and form.

A putter is also important because it helps with short throws, putting, and control near the basket.

Do beginners need distance drivers?

Most beginners do not need high-speed distance drivers right away. Faster drivers usually need more arm speed and cleaner form to fly properly.

Many new players get better results from putters, midranges, and fairway drivers before moving into faster distance drivers. For more detail, visit our Best Distance Drivers guide.

What weight should beginners throw?

Many beginners do well with moderate weights. For drivers, something around the mid-160g to low-170g range can be easier to throw. Putters and midranges are often comfortable in the 170g to 175g range.

Weight is only one part of the decision. Disc speed, stability, plastic, and comfort matter too. For a deeper breakdown, read our disc golf disc weight guide.

What plastic is best for beginners?

The best plastic for beginners is usually whatever feels comfortable and secure in the hand. Grippy putter plastics are useful for putting, while durable premium plastics can be helpful for midranges and drivers.

For a deeper breakdown, read our Disc Plastic Guide.

Disc Selection & Flight

Flight ratings, stability, and disc type can help you choose discs that match your current throw.

How do disc golf flight numbers work?

Disc golf flight ratings use four numbers: speed, glide, turn, and fade. These numbers describe how fast the disc needs to be thrown, how well it stays in the air, how much it turns, and how strongly it finishes.

Read our full Flight Ratings Guide for a detailed explanation.

What does understable mean?

An understable disc is more likely to turn during the high-speed part of the flight. For beginners and slower arm speeds, understable discs can help create straighter flights and easier distance.

You can learn more in our Stable vs Understable Discs guide.

What does overstable mean?

An overstable disc resists turning and finishes with stronger fade. Overstable discs are useful for wind, forehands, flex shots, and reliable finishing shots, but they can be harder for beginners to throw straight.

What is the difference between putters, midranges, fairway drivers, and distance drivers?

Putters are slower and best for short control. Midranges are useful for straight shots and learning form. Fairway drivers add controlled distance. Distance drivers are faster and are best once you have the arm speed to use them properly.

For a full breakdown, read How to Choose Disc Golf Discs.

How do I choose a putter?

Choose a putter that feels natural in your hand and releases cleanly. Most beginners should start with a neutral putter that feels comfortable for putting and short throws.

For more help, read our Best Putters for Beginners guide.

What is the easiest disc to throw straight?

Neutral putters and straight midranges are usually the easiest discs to throw straight. They do not require as much speed as drivers and give better feedback while you learn.

Browse our midranges or beginner-friendly discs.

Technique & Improvement

Better form usually comes from slower, more controllable discs and consistent practice.

Any quick tips to throw straighter?

Keep the disc flat, release smoothly, and avoid throwing nose-up. A straight midrange can be useful because it shows form issues more clearly than a very overstable disc.

If you are still choosing discs, start with slower, neutral-to-understable options.

Should I learn backhand or forehand first?

Most players start with backhand because it is common and useful on many shots. Forehand is a great skill to add later because it gives you more shot shapes and options around obstacles.

For driver selection, read our Backhand vs Forehand Distance Driver Guide.

Why does my driver fade left so quickly?

If you throw right-hand backhand and your driver fades left early, the disc may be too fast or too overstable for your current arm speed. A slower fairway driver, understable driver, or straight midrange may give you better results.

Read our Flight Ratings Guide for more detail.

How many discs should I carry?

Beginners can start with three discs. Developing players may add more discs for different shot shapes, stability levels, and wind conditions. You do not need a large bag right away.

For a simple setup, read How to Build Your First Disc Golf Bag.

Products & Availability

We try to make product selection clear, but disc colours, stamps, and availability can vary.

Do product photos match the exact disc?

Product photos may show the mold, plastic, or general look, but disc and stamp colours can vary unless the product listing clearly shows an exact individual disc. Assorted options are labeled where applicable.

If you have a colour preference, leave a note at checkout and we will do our best to accommodate when available.

We do our best to ship the selected weight or listed weight range shown on the product page. If there is ever an issue with availability, we will contact you before making a substitution.
